Cyperus conglomeratus is a perennial sedge native to tropical and subtropical regions. In Qatar, it has been found to grow in sandy and saline habitats, tolerating high temperatures and drought. Studies have shown that this plant is widely distributed across the country, particularly in coastal areas and inland sabkhas (salt flats). It plays a crucial role in stabilizing soil and providing habitat for local wildlife.
The plant Cyperus conglomeratus was observed in various locations throughout Qatar from 2012 to 2016. The sightings were predominantly in sandy areas, including dunes and roadside sand, as well as on rocky ridges. Locations included northern Qatar, such as Jazirat Umm Tays and Jebel Fuwairit, and southern Qatar, including Sealine Beach Resort and Maszhabiya Reserve. The plant was observed at different times of the year, with blooming and fruiting stages noted in several instances. The observations suggest that Cyperus conglomeratus is a common species in Qatar, able to thrive in a range of environments, from sandy dunes to rocky outcrops. The frequency and widespread nature of the sightings indicate its adaptability and resilience in the Qatari environment. Overall, the observations provide valuable insights into the distribution and growth patterns of Cyperus conglomeratus in Qatar.
