Anchusa hispida, also known as hairy alkanet, is a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean region. In Qatar, it has been found to grow in coastal areas and sandy soils. The plant is characterized by its hairy stems and leaves, with blue or purple flowers that bloom from February to April. In Qatar, Anchusa hispida typically grows up to 30-60 cm tall and can be found in areas with low vegetation and full sun. Its presence in Qatar has been documented in various flora surveys, highlighting the country's unique biodiversity despite its arid environment.
Anchusa hispida was observed growing near roads and in roadside depressions in various areas of Qatar, including southern, north-western, and northern regions. The plant was found on February 11, 2014, near a road to Sawda Natheel, and later on February 28, 2014, on the roadside of a road to Zubara. Seeds were collected in Doha on April 22, 2014, and near a road to Zubara on May 2, 2014. A large plant was seen on January 15, 2016, near Dukhan Highway, while seedlings were found under Ziziphus bushes in Al Mardiya - Wasit area on February 13, 2016, with some blooming and bearing small blue flowers. The plant was also spotted in windblown sand on Salwa Road on March 18, 2016. These observations suggest that Anchusa hispida is widely distributed in Qatar.
