Verbesina encelioides, also known as Golden Crownbeard or Butter daisy, is an annual herb native to the Americas but has been naturalized in other parts of the world, including the Middle East. In Qatar, it has been reported as a common invasive weed, particularly in areas with disturbed soil and along roadsides. It grows up to 1 meter tall, with bright yellow flower heads and triangular-shaped leaves. Its presence in Qatar is often associated with human activities, such as construction and agriculture, which have created habitats for this non-native species to thrive.
Observations of Verbesina encelioides in Qatar show that the plant produces flower buds as early as January 13, with blooming flowers appearing around January 18. The flowers are yellow and bloom for several weeks, with observations of blooming plants recorded on January 18, 21, and still present on March 17. Close-up views of the flowers and inflorescence were also observed on January 21. As the season progresses, the plant produces dry seed heads, which were observed on March 31. The seeds are also dry at this time, indicating that the plant's life cycle is complete. The observations were made on Al Shatt Street in Onaiza area, Doha, Qatar, over a period of several months. The plant's growth and development were tracked, providing insight into its life cycle in Qatar's environment.
