Bignonia stans, Stenolobium stans
Yellow trumpetbush
Tecoma stans is a species of flowering perennial shrub in the trumpet vine family, Bignoniaceae, that is native to the Americas. Common names include yellow trumpetbush, yellow bells, yellow elder, ginger-thomas. Tecoma stans is the official flower of the United States Virgin Islands and the floral emblem of the Bahamas.
Tecoma stans, also known as Yellow Bells or Trumpet Vine, is an evergreen shrub native to the Americas. In Qatar, it is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant due to its drought tolerance and vibrant yellow trumpet-shaped flowers. It thrives in the country's hot and dry climate, often used for landscaping and gardening purposes. Local studies have reported its ability to grow well in Qatar's soil conditions, with some instances of naturalization in urban areas. However, its invasive potential is considered low in Qatar due to the country's arid environment and lack of suitable habitats for widespread dispersal.
Observations of Tecoma stans in Qatar were made on multiple occasions between 2014 and 2016. The plant was spotted growing on a fence on Al Istiqlal Street in West Bay, Doha, in April 2014. It was also observed in a park at Al Intisar Street near Onaiza on several dates: May 3, 2015, December 1, 2015, and February 2, 2016. The plant's fruits were specifically noted on April 27, 2016, at the same park location. In some cases, there was uncertainty whether the observed plant was Tecoma stans or possibly Tecoma smithii. The observations suggest that Tecoma stans can thrive in Qatar's environment, growing in various settings such as fences and parks. Its presence was documented across different seasons, indicating its adaptability to the local climate.
