Boccone's sandspurry
Spergularia bocconei, Boccone's sandspurry, Greek sea-spurrey or Boccone's sea-spurrey is a species of the Spergularia genus, in the Caryophyllaceae family. It is named after the Sicilian botanist Paolo Boccone. Scheele first published it as Alsine bocconi in 1843. It was transferred to the genus Spergularia by Graebner in 1919. Pedersen placed the species in genus Spergula in 1984.
Spergularia bocconei, also known as Boccone's sand-spurrey, is an annual herb native to Europe and Western Asia. In Qatar, it has been found to grow in coastal areas, sandy beaches, and saline flats. The plant is adapted to tolerate high salt levels and can thrive in environments with low vegetation cover. Its presence in Qatar indicates a halophytic (salt-tolerant) community, often associated with other salt-loving species.
Observations of Spergularia bocconei in Qatar reveal that the plant was found in the area of Jabal Al Jassasiya, on the north-eastern coast. On January 29, 2016, the plant was observed to be in bloom, with flowers and fruits present. The flowers and fruits were also observed in detail, providing insight into the plant's reproductive structures. Additionally, the plant was photographed on a white background, allowing for a clear view of its morphology. These observations suggest that Spergularia bocconei is able to thrive in the coastal environment of Qatar, and can be found in areas with suitable soil and climate conditions. The presence of flowers and fruits indicates that the plant is capable of reproducing in this region. Overall, these observations provide valuable information about the distribution and biology of Spergularia bocconei in Qatar.
