Lepigonum fallax, Spergula flaccida, Spergula pentandra, Spergularia fallax
Degaygah
Spergula fallax is an annual herb native to Europe and Western Asia. In Qatar, it has been found to grow in sandy areas and along roadsides. It produces small white flowers from December to February. The plant is adapted to dry conditions and can thrive in poor soil. Its presence in Qatar indicates its ability to naturalize and spread in new regions with suitable climates.
Spergula fallax was observed blooming in various locations throughout Qatar, including southern, western, and northern regions. The plant was found growing in sandy areas, roadside depressions, and silty depressions, often near roads or in areas with disturbed soil. Observations were made during different times of the year, from January to March, with flowers and seed capsules present during these periods. The seeds were described as black with a broadly winged whitish margin, resembling caviar. The plant was also found to produce tiny fruits and have a local name of "degaygah". Additionally, the plant's growth habits and seed dispersal were observed in various locations, including Rawdat Rashed, Al Khor, and Al Harrarah. Overall, Spergula fallax appears to be a widespread and adaptable species in Qatar.
