Orange nightshade
Solanum luteum is an annual herb native to tropical and subtropical regions. It has yellow flowers and edible fruits, but all parts contain toxic compounds. In Qatar, it's considered an invasive weed, often found in disturbed areas, roadsides, and waste grounds, thriving in the country's arid environment.
The plant Solanum luteum was observed in several locations in Qatar, including Al Luqta and Onaiza areas. It was found growing in shady spots, with fruits and flowers present in March. The observations were made on Al Furqan Street and Al Rafiei Street, where the plant was seen blooming with orange or yellowish flowers. The fruits of the plant were also observed, and it is noted that the species may be S. villosum or S. nigrum instead of S. luteum. The plant's ability to grow in shady areas suggests that it can thrive in a variety of conditions. The observations provide insight into the plant's growth habits and distribution in Qatar, with multiple sightings in different areas of Doha.
