Mediterranean rocket, smooth mustard, ThuwaT
Sisymbrium erysimoides, also known as hedge mustard or erysimum, is an annual herb native to Europe and Western Asia. In Qatar, it has been found to grow as a naturalized weed in disturbed areas, roadsides, and waste grounds. It typically blooms from January to April, producing small yellow flowers. Studies have reported its presence in various regions of Qatar, including Doha and the northern parts of the country. The plant's ability to thrive in arid environments makes it a common sight in Qatar's urban and rural landscapes.
Mediterranean rocket (Sisymbrium erysimoides) was observed growing in silty depressions on the roadside of a road to Zubara, in the area of Al Magdah farms in Northern Qatar. The plant was found near Ziziphus bushes and as small individual plants. Observations were made on February 6, 2016, with multiple sightings in the same area, indicating its presence in the region. Another observation was made on February 13, 2016, also near a road to Zubara, suggesting that the plant can thrive in similar environments. The plant's growth in these areas suggests it can tolerate silty soil conditions and possibly disturbed habitats. Multiple observations of the plant in the same area over a short period indicate its ability to establish itself in Northern Qatar. The plant was seen growing alone and near other vegetation, such as Ziziphus bushes.
