Silene canopica
Desert Campion, terba, turbah
Silene villosa is a therophyte and an annual plant of the family Caryophyllaceae and genus Silene.
Silene villosa is a flowering plant species in the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae). It is an annual or biennial herb with hairy stems and leaves. In Qatar, Silene villosa has been found to grow in sandy areas and coastal regions. It typically blooms from February to May, producing white or pinkish flowers. The plant's presence in Qatar indicates its adaptability to arid environments.
Desert campion (Silene villosa) was observed in various locations in southern Qatar, including near Umm Bab, Maszhabiya Reserve, and along Salwa Road in the area of Khashem Al Nekhsh. The plant was found growing in sand, often in windblown areas, and was observed to be blooming from February to April. Small plants with white flowers were common, and wilted flowers were also seen. The plant was able to thrive in the desert environment, with observations showing it to be present in multiple locations over several months. The local name for the plant is "terba", and it was observed in both sandy and windy conditions, often along roadsides. Blooming plants were observed on multiple occasions, with white flowers being a distinctive feature.
