Glasswort
Salicornia sinus-persica is a succulent halophyte that grows in coastal salt marshes and mudflats. In Qatar, it has been found to thrive in areas with high salinity, such as the intertidal zones of the Arabian Gulf. Studies have shown that S. sinus-persica plays a crucial role in stabilizing the soil and preventing erosion in these environments. Additionally, it provides habitat for various marine species and helps to maintain biodiversity in Qatar's coastal ecosystems.
The plant Salicornia sinus-persica was observed in various locations in Qatar, primarily on Purple Island (Jazirat Bin Ghanim) and near Fuwairit. It was seen to have different colors depending on the season, with reddish foliage and stems visible in November and December. The plant was found in salt marshes and on beaches, and was sometimes inundated with water. Observations were made over a period of nearly two years, from September 2014 to June 2016. The plant's appearance varied, with some observations showing it with purple or reddish hues, while others showed it as a more typical green glasswort. The plant's ability to thrive in salty environments was also noted, with it being found in areas with high salt concentrations. Overall, the observations suggest that Salicornia sinus-persica is a hardy and adaptable plant.
