Freirea alsinifolia
Bird Tongue
Parietaria alsinifolia is an annual herb native to Europe and Western Asia. In Qatar, it has been found growing as an alien species, often in shaded areas with moist soil. It produces small, greenish-yellow flowers from February to May. Studies have reported its presence in various regions of Qatar, including Doha and the northern parts of the country, where it can thrive in urban environments and near water sources.
Parietaria alsinifolia was observed growing in association with Ziziphus nummularia bushes in north-western Qatar. On February 22, 2014, it was found growing among these bushes on the roadside to Zubara in Al Magdah farms area. Two years later, on January 29, 2016, seedlings of Parietaria alsinifolia were spotted under Ziziphus bushes in the same area. Further observation on February 27, 2016, revealed the plant growing under the protection of Ziziphus bushes in Yoodah depression near Al Zubara Road, indicating a possible preference for shaded or protected environments. The repeated sightings suggest that Parietaria alsinifolia may be commonly found in these types of habitats in northern Qatar. The plant's growth pattern and association with Ziziphus nummularia were consistent across the observations.
