Pallenis hierochuntica (common names include rose of Jericho and Dinosaur plant) is a species of Pallenis that is notable for being a resurrection plant.
Pallenis hierochuntica is a species of flowering plant in the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is native to the Middle East and North Africa. In Qatar, P. hierochuntica has been found growing in coastal and inland areas, often on sandy or rocky soils. Studies have reported its presence in various regions of Qatar, including the northeastern coast and central desert areas. The plant typically blooms from February to April, producing yellow flowers with a prominent center. Its growth habit is herbaceous, and it can form small clusters or mats. As an adapted species to arid environments, P. hierochuntica contributes to the local flora of Qatar, tolerating high temperatures and limited water availability.
Pallenis hierochuntica was observed growing in silty depressions on roadsides and farm areas in north-western, northern, and western Qatar. The plant was found in the Al Magdah farms area, Thaghab Al Majda, Ras Laffan, and near the road from Dukhan to Al Jumayliyah. Observations were made on February 22, 28, and March 1, 2014. The plant's flowers and central star-shaped capitula were also observed. It was noted that the plant has several synonyms, including Asteriscus pygmaeus and Odpntospermum pygmaeum, and is locally known as Jahwayan. The plant's growth in silty depressions suggests it may thrive in areas with specific soil conditions. Multiple observations were made in different locations, indicating the plant's presence in various parts of Qatar.
