Ononis sicula
Barak Sicily
Ononis sicula, also known as Sicilian restharrow, is a perennial legume native to the Mediterranean region. In Qatar, it has been found to grow in sandy and gravelly areas, often in association with other desert plants. Studies have reported its presence in various locations across the country, including the northern and central regions. The plant's ability to thrive in Qatar's arid environment is likely due to its deep taproot, which allows it to access water deep in the soil. Further research is needed to fully understand the ecology and distribution of Ononis sicula in Qatar.
Ononis sicula was observed near Ras Laffan in Northern Qatar, growing in silty depressions and small runnels. The plant was found to have yellow flowers with glandular hairs. Observations were made on two separate occasions, February 28, 2014, and February 12, 2016, with the plant blooming during both visits. In 2014, the plant was seen in a silty depression near Ras Laffan, while in 2016, it was found in a small runnel in the area of Ras Laffan Farms on the north-eastern coast. The plant's ability to grow in these specific environments suggests its adaptability to local conditions. The blooming plants were also extracted from the runnel for closer observation, providing further insight into the species' characteristics. Overall, Ononis sicula appears to thrive in Qatar's northern regions, particularly in areas with silty soil and small waterways.
