Figaraea aegyptiaca
Creeping-thorn Rose, sadan, saeed saydan
Neurada procumbens, also known as the "desert star" or "ground cover", is a small, prostrate shrub native to the Middle East and North Africa. In Qatar, it has been found to thrive in arid environments, often growing in sandy dunes and rocky outcrops. Studies have shown that Neurada procumbens is a common species in Qatari flora, particularly in areas with low vegetation cover. It has adapted to the country's harsh climate, tolerating high temperatures and drought conditions. The plant's small size and spreading habit allow it to stabilize soil and prevent erosion, making it an important component of Qatar's desert ecosystem.
Neurada procumbens, also known as sand button or creeping thorn rose, was observed in various locations in Qatar, including Harrarah, Jebel Al-Nakhsh, and southern Qatar. The plant was found growing on sand dunes and in windblown sand along roadsides. In February 2014, caterpillars were seen feeding on the plant near a road to Saudi Arabia. The plant produces white flowers and fruits, which were observed in March 2015 and April 2016. The plant's growth and blooming patterns were documented in different seasons, with blooming observed in March 2016. The local name for the plant is saadan, and it was also found near Green Circles (center-pivot irrigation) in Irkhaya Farms. Overall, Neurada procumbens appears to be a common desert plant in Qatar, adapted to growing in sandy conditions. Its growth and development were observed over several years.
