Huwa ghanam, huwa ghazal
Launaea nudicaulis is an annual herb native to tropical Africa and Asia. In Qatar, it has been found growing in sandy areas, often near coastal regions. The plant can thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating high temperatures and some drought. Its small flowers are typically yellow or white, blooming from February to May. Local studies have documented its presence in various Qatari habitats, including the Jandayah archaeological site and other areas with sandy soils. Launaea nudicaulis is considered a common weed in Qatar, often growing alongside other desert plants.
Launaea nudicaulis has been observed in various locations in Qatar, including lawns, deserts, and parks. The plant produces dandelion-like flowers, which have been seen in yellow. It has been spotted near Dar Al Salam Compound, Abu Hamour area, and along Al Luqta Street, opposite Education City. The plant has also been found on roadside of Al Sham Street in West Bay and in Green Circles (center-pivot irrigation) in Irkhaya Farms, south-western Qatar. In some cases, it was difficult to distinguish Launaea nudicaulis from L. procumbens due to similarities in appearance. Local names for the plant include huwa ghazal and huwa ghanam. The plant has been observed in different stages, including flowering and dry with seeds, between March and May, and also in November and December. It coexists with other plants like firecracker plant (Russelia equisetiformis).
