Koelpinia latifolia, Lapsana koelpinia, Rhagadiolus koelpinia
Goat's Beard, lahiat al-tais
Koelpinia linearis is an annual herb native to the Middle East and North Africa. In Qatar, it has been found growing in sandy and saline environments, such as coastal areas and salt flats. The plant typically blooms from February to May, producing small yellow or white flowers. It is considered a common weed in Qatar, often thriving in disturbed or overgrazed areas. Local studies have noted its presence in various regions of the country, including the north and west coasts, where it can form dense stands. Overall, Koelpinia linearis appears to be well adapted to Qatar's arid climate and saline soils.
The plant Koelpinia linearis was observed growing in windblown sand on the roadside of Salwa Road in the area of Khashem Al Nekhsh, Southern Qatar. It has narrow leaves and produces small yellow flowers, which are followed by brownish claw-shaped seed pods. The seeds have a distinctive shape and are often accompanied by red ticks. The plant's growth habit is prostrate, with branches bearing fruits that can be curved or straight. Observations were made on March 18, 2016, and the plant was found to be rare in the area. Additional observations were made on March 25, 2016, in the area of Jebel Al-Nakhsh, where the plant was also found growing on the roadside with fruits. The plant's ability to thrive in windblown sand suggests it is adapted to harsh desert conditions.
