Juncus rigidus is a perennial rush native to Africa, Asia, and Europe. In Qatar, it is found in wetland areas, such as marshes and coastal flats. The plant grows up to 1 meter tall, with stiff, erect stems and narrow, pointed leaves. It produces brownish flowers in summer. In Qatar, Juncus rigidus has been recorded in areas like Al Wakra and Al Thakira, where it thrives in saline environments with moist soil. Its presence indicates a brackish or salt-tolerant ecosystem.
Observations of Juncus rigidus in Qatar show that it grows in salt marshes near Fuwairit in Northern Qatar, with blooming rushes observed on April 3, 2014, and April 17, 2015. The plant produces seeds, with nutlets collected on September 20, 2014. It has also been spotted in other areas, including near French Beach on the north-eastern coast on March 19, 2016, and in Luwaima and Ras Al Qawar on June 18, 2016. In these locations, it grows in salt marshes and can also be found in windblown sand with flowers. The plant has been observed at different times of the year, including March, April, June, and September, indicating its adaptability to various environmental conditions in Qatar. Its presence has been documented through photographs, providing a visual record of its growth and distribution in the region.
