Hippocrepis areolata, Hippocrepis cornigera, Horseshoe Vetch, umm ghurein
Hippocrepis bicontorta is a perennial legume native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia. It has been found in Qatar, where it grows as a small shrub or herb with yellow flowers. In Qatar, H. bicontorta typically thrives in sandy soils and rocky outcrops, often in areas with limited vegetation.
Hippocrepis bicontorta was observed in various locations in Qatar, including Harrarah, southern Qatar, and western Qatar. The plant was found growing in sand near roads, with observations of its seed pods, seeds, flowers, and fruits. In some areas, the plant was prostrate, suggesting it can grow in a variety of positions. The plant was also observed in windblown sand, indicating its ability to thrive in different environmental conditions. Observations were made over several years, from 2010 to 2016, with multiple sightings in February and March, suggesting it may bloom during this time. Local names for the plant include "umm ghurein", and it was often found near roads, including the road to Saudi Arabia and Salwa Road.
