Halocnemum strobilaceum is a succulent shrub that thrives in coastal saline environments. In Qatar, it is commonly found in salt marshes and sabkhas (salt flats), where its deep roots allow it to tolerate high salinity levels. The plant's fleshy leaves and stems help to store water, enabling it to survive in areas with limited freshwater availability. Halocnemum strobilaceum plays a crucial role in stabilizing coastal soils and providing habitat for various wildlife species in Qatar's arid ecosystem.
The plant Halocnemum strobilaceum, also known as jointed glasswort, was observed in various locations in Qatar, primarily in salt marshes and coastal areas. Observations were made between February 2011 and June 2016, with most taking place on Purple Island (Jazirat Bin Ghanim) near Al Khor. The plant was found to be highly tolerant of salty conditions and formed dense mats or mounds in the salt marshes. It was observed in different stages of growth, including green, yellow, and brownish shoots. In some areas, such as Luwaima and Ras Al Qawar, the plant was seen forming sand mounds and covering large areas of the salt marsh. Overall, the observations suggest that Halocnemum strobilaceum is a common and resilient species in Qatar's coastal ecosystems.
