Gossypium herbaceum, also known as Levant cotton, is a species of cotton plant native to the Old World tropics. In Qatar, it has been found to be a rare and introduced species, likely naturalized through human activity. Studies have reported its presence in the country's coastal and inland areas, where it grows as a shrub or small tree. The plant's occurrence in Qatar is often associated with disturbed habitats, such as roadsides and waste grounds. Its adaptability to dry conditions makes it suitable for growth in Qatar's arid environment.
Observations of Gossypium herbaceum in Qatar revealed that the plant grows as a bush, with yellow flowers found near Dar Al Salam Compound in May 2013. The fruit, or seed pod, was also observed at this location. In January 2015, the plant was spotted on Al Istiqlal Street near West Bay, with dissected fruits showing its internal structure. Further observations in Al Luqta area in March 2015 revealed flowers in various stages, including a maroon-colored bloom. The plant was found to produce multiple flowers, with some having a close-up view showcasing its details. The presence of Gossypium herbaceum was recorded in different areas of Doha, Qatar, across various dates, highlighting its growth and development patterns in the region. The observations provide insight into the plant's morphology and distribution in Qatar.
