Petty Spurge
Euphorbia peplus (petty spurge, radium weed, cancer weed, or milkweed) is a species of Euphorbia, native to most of Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia, where it typically grows in cultivated arable land, gardens, and other disturbed land.[+]
Euphorbia peplus, also known as radium weed or petty spurge, is an annual herb native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. In Qatar, it has been naturalized and can be found growing in disturbed areas, gardens, and along roadsides. Studies have shown that Euphorbia peplus is widely distributed in Qatar, particularly in the northern and central regions. It is often associated with human activities, such as construction and landscaping, which may have contributed to its introduction and spread in the country. The plant's ability to thrive in a variety of environments and its production of toxic latex make it a notable species in Qatar's flora.
Petty spurge (Euphorbia peplus) was observed growing in various locations in Qatar, including the roadside of Al Sham Street in West Bay and under palm trees in Onaiza area. The plant was found to be growing alongside Euphorbia hirta in some areas. Observations were made on different dates, including April 16, 2014, April 7, 2015, and February 3, 2016. The plant was photographed in various stages, including with fruits, and from different angles, including close-up shots. It was also found to be growing in different conditions, such as under palms on Al Intisar Street and Al Jood Street. The observations suggest that petty spurge is a common and adaptable plant in Qatar, able to thrive in a variety of environments. Its growth patterns and appearance were documented through photographs taken over several years.
