Dodonaea viscosa is a species of flowering plant in the soapberry family, Sapindaceae, that has a cosmopolitan distribution in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions of Africa, the Americas, southern Asia and Australasia.
Dodonaea viscosa, also known as hop bush or sticky hop bush, is a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions. In Qatar, it has been found to grow in coastal areas and sandy dunes. Research suggests that Dodonaea viscosa is tolerant of high temperatures, salinity, and drought, making it well-suited to Qatar's arid environment. Studies have also identified its potential uses in traditional medicine and as a natural remedy for various ailments. Additionally, the plant has been found to play a role in stabilizing sand dunes and preventing erosion in Qatari ecosystems. Overall, Dodonaea viscosa is an adaptable and resilient species that thrives in Qatar's harsh desert conditions.
Observations of Dodonaea viscosa in Qatar reveal the plant produces distinctive winged seeds, which were seen on multiple occasions, including April 22, 2014, and March 8, 2015, on Al Istiqlal Street in West Bay, Doha. The seeds are contained within seed capsules that eventually open to release them. The plant itself was observed growing near a fence on Al Istiqlal Street, indicating its ability to thrive in urban environments. Flowers of the hopbush were also spotted, specifically on February 19, 2015, in the Onaiza area, with close-up observations revealing their detailed structure. Overall, these sightings suggest that Dodonaea viscosa is a resilient and adaptable species capable of growing in various conditions within Qatar. The repeated sightings over time indicate its presence is persistent in certain areas of Doha.
