False amaranth
Digera muricata is an annual herb native to tropical Africa and Asia. In Qatar, it has been found growing in sandy areas, such as coastal dunes and saline flats. The plant is characterized by its erect stem, ovate leaves, and small white or pink flowers. It thrives in arid conditions and can tolerate high soil salinity, making it a common sight in Qatar's desert environments during the winter months when rainfall is more frequent.
The plant Digera muricata, also known as false amaranth, was observed growing on the periphery of a small field of alfalfa in Harrarah settlement, Southern Qatar. It was found to be blooming with flowers in October 2015. The observations showed that the plant had flower spikes, and both its flowers and leaves were visible. The flowers of the false amaranth were also specifically observed, as well as the overall appearance of the plant while it was in bloom. These observations suggest that Digera muricata can thrive in the environment surrounding agricultural fields in Qatar, and can be found growing in areas with alfalfa crops. The plant's growth and blooming patterns were documented through photographs taken on October 30, 2015.
