Mulakkiyah al bar, wild jute
Corchorus trilocularis is an annual herb native to tropical Africa and Asia. In Qatar, it has been found growing wild, particularly in areas with moist soil. It is a small, branched plant with hairy leaves and yellow flowers. Studies have reported its presence in various regions of Qatar, often as a weed in cultivated fields or along roadsides. The plant's adaptability to arid environments and ability to thrive in poor soil conditions make it a notable species in the Qatari flora.
Wild jute (Corchorus trilocularis) was observed growing in various locations in Northern Qatar, including silty depressions and roadsides. In October 2015, it was found with flowers in a depression on the roadside of a road to Zubara. By November 2015, it had grown together with Corchorus depressus in the same area. In January 2016, seedlings were spotted in silty depressions near Al Nuaman and Al Numan. The plant continued to grow in these areas, with observations recorded in February 2016. The species was often found in areas with caked mud and silt, suggesting a preference for these types of environments. Overall, the observations suggest that wild jute is able to thrive in a variety of conditions in Northern Qatar. It can be found growing alone or with other plants, and can survive in different stages of development.
