Corchorus depressus is a species of flowering plant in the family Malvaceae. It is an annual herb with prostrate or spreading stems, elliptic leaves, and small yellow flowers. In Qatar, Corchorus depressus has been found to be a common weed in cultivated fields, roadsides, and waste areas, particularly in the northern and central regions of the country. It grows during the winter months, from November to March, and is often associated with disturbed or sandy soils. The plant's presence in Qatar is likely due to its ability to tolerate high temperatures and drought, making it well adapted to the country's arid environment.
The plant Corchorus depressus was observed in various locations across Qatar from February 2014 to December 2015. It was found to be a mat-forming, prostrate desert plant that grows in silty depressions and on roadside areas. The plant produces yellow flowers, which are rarely seen open, and fruits. Observations were made in southern, northern, and central regions of Qatar, including near Sawda Natheel Road, Simaisma, Al Nuaman, Zubara, Mesayeed, Harrarah, and Dukhan Highway. The plant was often found growing in dense mats, with many-branched shoots and flower buds. Some observations noted the presence of other plants, such as Zygophyllum simplex and Corchorus trilocularis, growing alongside Corchorus depressus. Overall, the observations suggest that Corchorus depressus is a common and widespread plant species in Qatar's desert environments.
