Chickpea, humus, nakhi
The chickpea or chick pea (Cicer arietinum) is a legume of the family Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae. It is also known as gram, or Bengal gram, garbanzo or garbanzo bean and sometimes known as Egyption pea, ceci, cece or channa. Its seeds are high in protein. It is one of the earliest cultivated legumes: 7,500-year-old remains have been found in the Middle East.
Cicer arietinum, commonly known as chickpea, is a leguminous plant native to the Middle East. In Qatar, archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of chickpea cultivation dating back to ancient times. Studies suggest that Cicer arietinum was an important crop in Qatar's past, providing a source of protein and nutrition for its inhabitants. Today, it remains a significant crop in Qatari agriculture, with research focusing on improving yields and disease resistance in the country's arid climate.
Observations of Cicer arietinum in Qatar revealed the presence of two varieties: Desi and Kabuli. The Desi variety had brown-colored seeds and was found in Souq Waqif on April 5, 2013. In contrast, the Kabuli variety had light tan seeds and was also found in Souq Waqif, but on September 11, 2015. Additionally, oval seed pods of chickpea were spotted on the roadside of Salwa Road near Karaana on April 23, 2014. The seeds of both varieties were available in the spice section of Souq Waqif, indicating their commercial importance. The sightings suggest that Cicer arietinum is cultivated and consumed in Qatar, with different varieties being available at different times of the year. The presence of seed pods on the roadside also indicates that the plant may be growing wild or escaping from cultivation in some areas.
