Golden shower tree
Cassia fistula, known as the golden shower tree and by other names, is a flowering plant in the family Fabaceae. The species is native to the Indian subcontinent and adjacent regions of Southeast Asia. It ranges from southern Pakistan eastward throughout India to Myanmar and Thailand and south to Sri Lanka. In literature, it is closely associated with the Mullai (forest) region of Sangam landscape. It is the national tree of Thailand, and its flower is Thailand's national flower. It is also the state flower of Kerala in India and of immense importance amongst the Malayali population. It is a popular ornamental plant and is also used in herbal medicine.
Cassia fistula, also known as the Golden Shower Tree, is an ornamental plant commonly found in Qatar. It is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 15 meters tall, with bright yellow flowers and long, cylindrical pods. In Qatar, it thrives in the country's hot and dry climate, often planted in parks, gardens, and along roadsides for its aesthetic value and ability to tolerate drought. The plant blooms from May to July, producing vibrant yellow flowers that attract pollinators, making it a popular choice for landscaping in the region.
Observations of Cassia fistula in Qatar reveal that the plant blooms with vibrant yellow flowers, often in pendulous racemes. The trees were observed to be in bloom in Aspire Park on multiple occasions, including May 2, 2015, and May 17, 2016. The flowers were seen hanging from the branches, and some had fallen to the ground. The plant was also spotted in the Onaiza area on May 28, 2015. In October 2015, a tree was observed in Aspire Park without flowers, suggesting that the blooming period may be limited to spring. Overall, the observations suggest that Cassia fistula is a thriving species in Qatar, particularly in Aspire Park, where it can be found with beautiful yellow blooms during the spring season. The plant's flowering pattern and growth were consistently observed across multiple visits.
