Gouhanamiya, paperflower
Bougainvillea glabra, lesser bougainvillea or paperflower, is the most common species of bougainvillea used for bonsai.
Bougainvillea glabra is a thorny, evergreen vine native to South America. In Qatar, it is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant, thriving in the country's warm and dry climate. It produces bright purple, pink, or white bracts surrounding small white flowers, making it a popular choice for gardens and landscapes. Due to its drought tolerance and ability to grow in full sun, Bougainvillea glabra is well-suited to Qatar's arid environment, often used as a hedge, screen, or decorative feature in public spaces and private gardens.
Observations of Bougainvillea glabra in Qatar show that the plant is widely present in various areas of Doha, including Fereej Abdel Aziz, West Bay, and Al Markhiya Street. The plant is often found on streets, fences, and in parks, and is observed to be blooming at different times of the year, including April, May, and October. The flowers are vibrant and produce a large number of petals, which often fall to the ground, creating a colorful display. Over time, the petals dry out and turn brown, as seen in observations from October 2014. The plant's ability to thrive in Qatar's climate is evident, with blooming observed in multiple locations and at different times of the year, including May 2015 when it was found blooming in a park at Al Markhiya Street.
