Amaranthus acutilobus, Amaranthus gracilis
Khaisa, samghat reeh, sendar, slender amaranth
Difficult to distinguish it from A. hybridus and A. caudatus.
Amaranthus viridis is a cosmopolitan species in the botanical family Amaranthaceae and is commonly known as Slender Amaranth or Green Amaranth.
Amaranthus viridis, also known as slender amaranth or green amaranth, is an annual herb native to the tropical Americas but now widely distributed globally, including Qatar. In Qatar, it has been found growing wild in various habitats, particularly in areas with moist soil and full sun. Research conducted in Qatar has identified A. viridis as a common weed species, often thriving in disturbed or cultivated areas, such as agricultural fields, roadsides, and urban gardens. Its presence in Qatar highlights the country's role as a hub for the introduction and naturalization of non-native plant species.
Observations of Amaranthus viridis were made in various locations across Qatar. The plant was found growing on the Corniche promenade in Doha, near Al Markhiya Street in West Bay, and on the periphery of an alfalfa field in Harrarah settlement. It also grew under a palm tree in Onaiza area and on the median strip of Al Istiqlal Street. The plant was observed at different times of the year, including April, May, October, and November. Close-up observations revealed details such as fruit and flower spikes. Large plants were found growing on the median strip, indicating the species' ability to thrive in urban environments. Local names for the plant include samghat reeh, khaisa, and sendar. Overall, Amaranthus viridis appears to be a widespread and adaptable species in Qatar.
